As from 7 April 2016 everyone may apply for the new Smart ID card that is available from Home Affairs offices and some of the major Banks in Gauteng. Up until the 6th of April, only pensioners over the age of 60 were allowed to apply.

Two of South Africa’s biggest banks, FNB and Standard Bank, had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Home Affairs for the pilot project, while Nedbank has expressed its willingness to participate. The government plans to convert the more than 38-million citizens with green-coded ID books to Smart ID Cards.

The Department of Home Affairs is proud to present eHomeAffairs to enable you as a South African born citizen to apply your Smart ID Card and/or passport online. Citizens will be able to:

  • Submit application forms online
  • Upload supporting documents
  • Make online payments
  • And schedule Home Affairs Branch visits

The online registration service is initially only available to applicants ages 30 – 35. Invitation to other categories will be announced soon. In the mean time you can visit any Home Affairs office close to you and they will assist you with your service request. All on-line applications will have to be completed by having your fingerprints taken at a Home Affairs Office or Bank. Remember to have you ID book and Proof of Residence at hand when completing your application at the Home Affairs Office or Bank.
