The Boston Terrier dog was originally bred to be fighting dogs but today they are gentle, affectionate companions with tuxedo-like markings that earned them the name “American Gentleman”. Boston Terriers are compact, short-tailed, well-balanced little dogs and weigh no more than 12kg. Some are high-spirited and clownish, while some are calm and dignified, even placid. Some are stubborn characters, while others are sweet and gentle. Boston Terriers are highly affectionate dogs who get along with all members of the family in just about any type of home, even apartments. However, these playful pups also need plenty of exercise.
They are extremely sensitive to his owner’s moods, some Boston Terriers are one-person dogs, with a special affinity for the elderly.
The Boston’s sleek, fine coat does shed somewhat but not allot. Boston Terrier puppies are born with floppy ears that stand up on their own by the age of 4 months, but then flip backwards during teething phases at about 4 ½ months of age. After which they straighten up again. Early socialization and puppy training classes are recommended. Some Boston Terriers are prone to getting overweight, so watch your dog’s calorie consumption and weight level, but they should do well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian’s supervision and approval.
